Chiropractors treat problems with your joints, bones and muscles, and the effects they have on your nervous system. Chiropractic does not involve the use of drugs or surgery.
Treatment mainly involves safe, often gentle, specific adjustments, done by hand, to free joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving properly. Most often, this requires a short thrust to a joint that can result in a “popping” sound and may bring relief of symptoms as well as an increased feeling of wellbeing.
Adjustments are used to improve the efficiency of your nervous system and release your body’s natural healing ability- we all have the ability to fix ourselves, but if the joints in our spine aren’t moving very well, this can have an effect on the surrounding nerves and so they can’t do their jobs properly! Usually, if some of the joints in the spine are a little stiffer than normal, the knock-on effect to the nerves will then cause certain muscles to tighten up and become painful. It’s highly possible that those tight muscles at the top of your shoulders are due to an underlying joint problem!
The “pop” is simply the sound of bubbles of gas popping in the fluid of the joint as the pressure is released.
